ULIÈGE TRAVEL POLICY: RECONCILING ACADEMIC MISSIONS AND ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION In October 2025, the ULiège Board of Directors approved a new travel policy, which will come into force on 1st January 2026. The aim of this policy is to centralise, clarify and harmonise all the rules governing business travel abroad. This policy incorporates the environmental strategy adopted in 2022, which aims to reduce the carbon footprint of travel, in particular by limiting flights to destinations accessible by train and promoting alternative digital technologies and promoting the use of rail transport. The project is being led by a dedicated working group, headed by Pierre Duysinx, Vice-Rector for Mobility and International Affairs, with the aim of reconciling academic imperatives, environmental commitments, equity and good resource management. The document addresses aspects of authorisation, inclusion, financing, risk management and carbon offsetting, and applies to all travel financed, in whole or in part, by ULiège, excluding daily or private journeys not financed by the institution. durable@uliege.be TOWARDS A SINGLE PLATFORM TO PROMOTE THE SECOND LIFE OF EQUIPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY The University is working to develop a circularity platform that will extend the life of equipment, reduce waste and promote responsible behaviour within the university community. By facilitating the donation and reuse of equipment, this initiative will support responsible resource management and generate savings by limiting the purchase of new equipment. A showcase for sustainability at ULiège, the platform will act as an intermediary between sustainable public procurement services, the Repair Café and the student helpdesk, thereby promoting a circular economy approach. To ensure its effectiveness, it is essential to rely on local, user-friendly solutions tailored to the specific needs of the university. durable@uliege.be TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE AND LOCAL CANTEENS: ULIÈGE TAKES BACK CONTROL OF ITS UNIVERSITY CATERING IN 2026 The University of Liège will internalise the management of its canteens from January 2026 through its non-profit organisation Restaurants Universitaires. This decision, supported by an expert report, aims to guarantee healthy, sustainable and affordable food at no extra cost to users. It is part of the transformation of campuses into laboratories for transition, in line with the University's values of social responsibility. Already committed to this approach, ULiège offers 100% locally sourced soups, has eliminated 90% of disposable tableware and combats waste through flash sales. Internalisation will offer better control over quality, local sourcing, costs and environmental impact, while strengthening regional roots, staff well-being and flexibility of supply. The process is being supported by a Steering Committee comprising students, staff members and local stakeholders, as well as the Walloon Region's Manger Demain unit, to ensure a gradual and coherent transition.
