Eight new flagship projects for the University of Liège's Transition Roadmap

On February 11, 2026, the Board of Directors of the University of Liège approved eight new flagship projects that will reinforce the integration of sustainability into all university activities and practices. These will constitute the priorities for the implementation of the Transition Roadmap in 2026.

In line with the strategic priorities of the Transition Roadmap, the Board of Directors approved the following flagship projects for 2026:

• Development of a Participatory Climate Plan, which aims to define a path towards carbon neutrality based on the institution's carbon footprint calculation and to promote collective buy-in through participatory workshops
• Reflection on alternative financing mechanisms to secure the renovation of university infrastructure
• Operational implementation of sustainable canteens, which aims to define the phasing and implement it to achieve 80% sustainability in food offerings by 2030.
• Develop a carbon offset interface to encourage staff members who travel by plane to offset the emissions associated with their flights.
• Strengthening sustainable waste management to reduce waste at source, promote reuse, and continue to improve sorting.
• Promotion of sustainable practices in laboratories to raise awareness and reduce the environmental impact of research activities.
• Rolling outcross-disciplinary teaching on sustainability and transition based on adapting existing programs, analyzing feasibility, and experimenting with new programs
• Developing support for a culture of sustainability by implementing measures to engage members of the university community.

All of these projects aim to strengthen institutional exemplarity, disseminate sustainability practices in all aspects of university life, and promote collective ownership of transition issues.

By 2025, seven major projects from the Transition Roadmap had been completed, including the creation of the Transition Laboratory , the launch of the online course "Sustainability and Transition" , the adoption of aTravel Policy , and the adoption of a framework document on sustainable campus development.

These achievements form a structural foundation on which the 2026 priorities are based, with a view to continuity, consolidation, and increased ambition.
