STRENGTHENING THE UNIVERSITY'S COMMITMENT TO THE GOVERNANCE OF THE ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION On 11th April 2025, five members of the ULiège university community were appointed to sit on the Coordination and Monitoring Committee for the ecological transition policy of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. This appointment is a testament to both their expertise and their commitment to sustainability. Pierre Ozer (Faculty of Science) contributes his expertise in climate change science, climate risks and adaptation; Johan Michaux (Faculty of Science) represents biodiversity and ecosystem services issues; Frédéric Heselmans (Faculty of Social Sciences) contributes his analysis of the social dimensions of climate change; Sophie Trachte’s (Faculty of Architecture) expertise covers issues related to sustainable architecture and energy savings; finally, Cécile Van de Weerdt (Green Office) is involved for her expertise in environmental education. Their presence on this strategic committee is a major asset for the representativeness of ULiège and strengthens the role of the institution in the dynamics of the ecological transition at the regional level. FIND OUT MORE WITH ECLOSIO, COMMITTED ALLIANCES IN THE SERVICE OF SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE • ULiège students take on fast fashion In 2024, 45 young people from nine European countries travelled across Europe for three weeks with one goal in mind: to combat the excesses of fast fashion by making their voices heard. The programme included awarenessraising activities on the streets and political meetings, even at the European Parliament! The Belgian delegation was made up of students from ULiège – Juliette, Leina, Pauline and Ornella – accompanied by Romane, civic education officer at Eclosio. At the end of December, the five Belgian participants got together for a Slow Fashion Tour and a sewing/repair workshop, discovering sustainable fashion alternatives in Liège. FIND OUT MORE • Cultivating resilience in northern Benin: a synergy between research and the field In northern Benin, Eclosio has been collaborating with ULiège (Prof. Yves Beckers, Faculty of Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech) on a research and development project funded by ARES for two years. Confronted with poverty, food insecurity and the effects of climate change, this project aims to work with local communities to develop resilient agricultural practices based on a combination of crop farming, livestock farming and forestry (agrosylvo-pastoralism). This initiative is based on strong synergy between the scientific expertise of ULiège and local universities — notably through the supervision of four doctoral theses — and Eclosio's grassroots roots activities, in conjunction with local livestock farmers' associations. A key tool in the project is an interactive relief model, designed by Cédric Vermeulen (Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech), which enables communities to map their territory, exchange ideas and plan collectively. This project represents a real step forward towards sustainable and inclusive agriculture in northern Benin, integrating traditional knowledge and academic expertise. FIND OUT MORE • Eclosio, a key player in the ASSET project in Cambodia As part of its participation in the ASSET project, which supports agroecological transition in Southeast Asia, Eclosio, via the Uni4Coop consortium, is actively supporting Chanmony Sean's doctoral research. This research, conducted jointly by the Royal University of Agriculture in Cambodia and the University of Liège, aims to develop a framework for evaluating a methodology to support the agroecological transition in Cambodia. Thanks to its presence in the field and its strong links with local actors, Eclosio facilitates connections between the doctoral student and Cambodian NGOs, cooperatives and decision-makers, while providing her with essential technical and logistical support. Chanmony Sean will return to Belgium from July to September 2025 to continue her work and strengthen academic partnerships.
