RÊVE GÉNÉRAL FESTIVAL: ART, SCIENCE & DEMOCRACY The Rêve Général Festival: Art, Science & Democracy took place from 2nd to 28th April 2024 on the Sart Tilman campus. Nearly 200 activities (master classes, conferences, workshops, shows, screenings, exhibitions) were set up and were enjoyed by over 13,000 participants, including 7,200 members of the ULiège community. The Festival was organised by ULiège, Arsenic2 and the Centre d’Action Laïque de la Province de Liège, in collaboration with no fewer than 120 partners. The aim was clearly stated: to put on an ambitious programme of events that would fit in with and support different courses during the day and open up the University in the evenings and at weekends to a wide range of audiences, focusing on social issues, such as food, health, environment, climate, migration, gender issues and social inequalities. The Festival opened with a lecture by Aurélien Barrau, who was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Liège. The themes addressed in his lecture ranged from the role of universities in the necessary ecological transition to how to reinvent decision-making and democratic mechanisms to respond effectively to the consequences of climate change, the collapse of biodiversity and the socioeconomic consequences for human beings. By mobilising a diversity of viewpoints, experiences and sensibilities, the Rêve Général festival certainly helped to place the University at the heart of the city and of today’s challenges. It nurtured and strengthened the courses offered by the institution’s various faculties and acted as a multidisciplinary incubator for thinking differently about the world, highlighting the One Health approach in particular and imagining desirable transitions.
