Green Office survey: first results


The vast majority of you feel concerned about sustainable development and find it useful to have a Green Office at the university.

In recent weeks, you have responded to a Green Office survey. Here are the first results!

From the 17th of April to the 10th of May, the students of the University of Liège had the opportunity to answer a survey launched by the Green Office in order to learn more to learn more the students’ sustainable behaviour at university.  402 students from different faculties  took part in the survey.

You feel concerned about sustainable development

Indeed, a very large majority of respondents feel concerned about sustainable development and even more so about environmental issues. Moreover, almost all respondents are concerned about their future, that of the planet and of humanity.

However, even though respondents say they are concerned about environmental problems, a minority of them (39.1%) have already heard of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In terms of the sustainables actions carried out by students , the one that is the most achieved is waste sorting, with 78.4% of the respondents always sorting their waste. The 2 gestures that met with the least success with the respondents are eating vegetarian food and avoiding taking a plane on vacation. Respondents gave themselves an average score of 6.71 out of 10 for carrying out actions to reduce their energy consumption.

You find it useful to have a Green Office at the university

Although the majority of respondents (62.2%) were not aware of the Green Office prior to completing the survey, it is clear that respondents (98.3%) find it useful to have a structure such as the Green Office within the University. 50% of the respondents said that they wanted to get involved in the Green Office in various ways: participation in specific actions, involvement in the development of a project as greener or as a student job, and 25% of the respondents have already left their contact details in order to be contacted. 

Many respondents left comments of support and encouragement for the Green Office.  As an example, here are three of them:

  • "Great initiative, I didn't know!"
  • "Very good initiative, I am delighted to see these beautiful projects in action! Thank you very much!"
  • "I find your initiative quite interesting. Bravo!"

You wish to be better informed on the causes and solutions to be brought to solve environmental problems

Finally, respondents gave themselves an average score of 6.22 out of 10 for their level of information on environmental problems and the main causes. Students gave themselves an average score of 5.62 out of 10 for their level of information about existing solutions to improve the sustainability of society. Respondents are therefore asking for help to implement more sustainable practices, especially information on small actions to reduce their impact, information on sustainable development and the impact of their habits and tutorials.

As far as the sustainable Welcome pack  project is concerned, 89.6% of respondents would be interested in this pack. Many different ideas and remarks were made for the creation of this one.

Finally, 93% of the respondents would like more water fountains  at the University. Even though 78% of the respondents already use the existing water fountaines, the obvious lack of water coolers and the malfunctioning of these were widely highlighted.
