A policy that takes strong action in favour of sustainable development is naturally at the heart of our university's missions; teaching, research and community services. We are convinced that our University can make a significant contribution through its main types of activities.

Research

The research units of our university have been engaged for many years in innovative activities designed to improve and even revolutionise the way we move, heat, live and eat. This is done through our activities in fundamental research, but also through our partnerships with the industrial and business sectors to enhance the value of research findings.

Education

Teaching is a particularly suitable vehicle for passing on the results of research, for mobilising our students and for involving them in research programmes linked to societal concerns . Outside the classroom, laboratory work, thesis and doctoral theses are high points where cutting-edge research, supervised by teachers, can develop.

Citizenship

In its external-oriented activities, ULiège must actively take an even more active part in the public debate. It can of course do so through interventions of its experts in the media and by organising and participating in various events.

Operational projects

Finally, ULiège intends to act itself in a very concrete way by re-examining its practices in several areas: in its general infrastructure policy, in the management of its proprety assets stock, in the management of all its staff so as to promote favourable conditions to well-being at work, by taking care, to cite just one emblematic example, to implement a mobility policy aimed at better management of time and resources.

It can act structurally in several areas. For example, through public procurement, it can impose clauses relating to the environment on companies bidding for contracts. But it is undoubtedly in the field of infrastructure - real estate in particular - that it can best develop an eco-responsible policy by putting into practice the discoveries and innovations of its own research laboratories.

Finally, the university counts among its members remarkable personalities who actively participate in social debates, either as experts to provide an authoritative opinion on complex issues, or as citizens by intervening in the media or social networks.

Creation of a coordination structure for sustainable development

In December 2019, ULiège set up a coordination and expertise structure for sustainable development. This structure is composed of a Coordination Committee and a Scientific Council for Sustainable Development . The purpose of is to coordinate, support, initiate and encourage projects related to sustainable development.

In January 2020, the institution also established a (Restricted access link) , in charge of coordinating projects run by and for students.
