2500 m2 of photovoltaic panels in Sart Tilman
The University of Liège has acquired 2500 m2 of photovoltaic panels to install them on three large car parks on the Sart Tilman campus. This equipment will make it possible to supply 400,000 kWh annua
The large car parks P14, P15 and P16 located on the Boulevard du Rectorat of the Sart Tilman campus have been equipped with 1759 photovoltaic panels, covering an area of 2639 m2.
T
he objective is to supply 400,000 kWh annually, equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 100 households. The energy produced will directly supply two electric cabins in the northern zone of Sart Tilman, without being re-injected into the grid. This electricity will be consumed in the university buildings supplied by these two cabins. "At the current price of electricity, these panels should make it possible to generate a saving of 50,000 euros per year, not counting the green certificates which should represent a similar contribution" explains Christian Evens, Director of the Administration of Real Estate Resources at ULiège. The investment of this project developed with the company Engie-Cofély represents an amount of one million euros.
This photovoltaic installation will be the first large-scale photovoltaic installation at the University of Liège, which until now had only 20 m2 in Montefiore (Faculty of Applied Sciences), on an experimental basis. The choice of location on the large car parks was guided by their constant sunshine and the clearance they offer, since it will be possible to orient the panels to the South.
This project is part of ULiège's wider environmental policy to reduce fossil fuel energy consumption. In 2011, a biomass cogeneration - which produces heat and electricity from wood pellets - had already taken place at Sart Tilman. Other investments to improve the energy performance of buildings are planned as part of the EEEF (European Energy Efficiency Fund) energy renovation program, as well as the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the new veterinary clinic and the Botanique.

The energy crisis concerns us all. It also impacts ULiège, which is launching the #SaveEnergy campaign to raise awareness among its community about a few simple but essential actions to reduce our energy consumption.
