An office schedule (8-18h - 5 days a week) represents less than 30% of the total duration of a week. Any electrical appliance that remains on outside of these hours represents a significant consumption and important CO2 emissions.

It is advisable toturn off your electrical devices (printer, scanner, coffee machine...) at the end of the day or at least before the weekend and vacation periods.

In order to facilitate the extinction of these devices, you can gather all the devices on a multi-socket which you will be able to switch off easily at the end of the day. Indeed, even cut, the power supplies of the screens, mobile phone chargers... still consume some energy.

In practice

  • For the computer equipment managed by SEGI (the central administration computers), the PCs are automatically shut down in the evening (if the user forgets) and must remain connected to the electrical network for the automatic management of updates (scheduled at night). The screens are turned off manually. For the Faculties, it is recommended that you contact Unité Décentralisée d'Informatique (UDI) in case of doubt about the potential impact of switching off computer equipment. Did you know? A computer that consumes 100 W and remains on all year long (instead of during working hours) represents an excess consumption of at least 615 kWh per year (equivalent to about 20% of a household's electricity consumption) and 280 kg of CO2.
  • Remove the chargers of your electronic devices (mobile phone, laptop...) from the socket when you are not using them because their standby consumption is far from negligible.
  • Avoid the use of display screens or Smart TVs in the wards or corridors as these devices consume 50 to 300 W in operation. If these are essential, consider contacting your Decentralized IT Unit (UDI) to select a display screen that can be automatically turned off to reduce their consumption.
  • Turn off the ventilation of laboratory fume hoods and fume cupboards when not in use, in accordance with safety standards.
