ULiège continues its commitment to reducing energy consumption
For several years now, ULiège has been committed to drastically reducing its energy consumption, by improving the thermal performance of buildings, optimizing technical systems to regulate energy consumption and limiting heating in buildings to 19°C .
Climate change is of concern to all of us individually, as well as to the University of Liège, which is working to reduce its impact on it.
While ULiège has been carrying out projects to reduce its energy consumption with a view to sustainable development for a number of years now, the urgency of climate change means that we need to accelerate the movement towards energy sobriety. This implies a collective effort in which each and every one of us can play a concrete part.
What is ULiège doing to reduce its energy consumption?
The University of Liège is committed to regional and European policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption by 2030, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.in its new Institutional Strategic Plan adopted on September 13, 2023, ULiège also announced its intention to accelerate the transformation of its campuses into transition laboratories, in particular by integrating sustainability objectives, such as a 55% reduction in carbon footprint by 2030, into the development of a campus development plan.
ULiège is currently a producer of renewable energies, enabling it to cover 21% of its electricity needs and 43% of its heating needs autonomously.
Last but not least, the fact that heating in all University buildings will be limited to 19°C this autumn and winter means that energy consumption will be reasonable during this period.
The #SaveEnergy campaign: every ecogesture counts!
There are a multitude of actions we can take to reduce our consumption and move towards energy sobriety. The impact will be all the more significant if these individual gestures are adopted by everyone.
As of October 2023, ULiège is relaunching the #SaveEnergy campaign on its various campuses to raise awareness and inform its community about these gestures, focusing on the most important at this critical time:
Heating
- Avoid portable electric radiators ("chaufferettes"): if you feel cold, contact the Cellule Energie for alternatives
- Leave thermostatic valves in their initial position in offices (automatic heating control), except when unoccupied for long periods
Electricity
- Switch off lights when leaving the office or a room
- Switch off electrical appliances at the end of the day or week, except in exceptional circumstances
- Share shared electrical equipment (printers, fridges, coffee machines, etc.) as much as possible
